Africa is slowly splitting due to the movement of tectonic plates along the East African Rift System (EARS). This massive geological rift, spanning about 3,100 miles, is where the African plate is separating into two smaller plates: the Somali and Nubian plates. 

These plates are pulling apart very slowly—just a few millimeters per year—but over millions of years, it could lead to the creation of a new ocean that divides East Africa from the rest of the continent.




The process began around 25 million years ago, driven by complex geological forces, possibly including a superheated mantle plume rising beneath the Earth's crust. This rift zone isn't just a crack—it’s a dynamic system affecting large regions, creating volcanoes, earthquakes, and even new land formations as magma flows beneath the surface. For example, a sudden 26-foot-wide crevasse opened in Ethiopia in 2005 due to magma movement.

In areas like Kenya, these rift-related changes have been dramatic, with deep chasms suddenly appearing, likely worsened by local conditions such as rainfall. Although the actual splitting will take millions of years, the visible signs today are reminders of the Earth's ongoing tectonic activity.
