Black-on-Black Betrayal: The Tragedy of Crimes Against Returning Africans

Why Killing Those Who Choose to Rebuild Africa Is a Crime Against Humanity

Throughout history, Africa has endured colonial exploitation, systemic underdevelopment, and cultural erasure. Yet, some of its children — both those born on the continent and those from its vast diaspora — continue to believe in Africa's potential. These individuals, lovers of Africa and its people, choose to return, invest, and rebuild. But what happens when those who return are met not with open arms but with violence and betrayal? The answer lies in a series of murders, systemic failures, and misplaced priorities that leave Africans and their allies questioning their efforts and loyalties.

A Blood-Stained History of Violence

From February 24 to March 11, 2021, harrowing testimonies before the Gambia's Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) revealed that 59 migrants from nine West African countries were killed under Yahya Jammeh’s regime. These individuals, many bound for Europe, fell victim to paramilitary units like the “Junglers,” operating under direct orders from Jammeh himself. The victims were Black brothers and sisters, betrayed by a system meant to protect them.

More recently, in 2024, the murder of Black-British national Leonard Dominique in The Gambia highlight's an ongoing pattern of violence.

Dominique, a man who sought to build a life in Africa, was allegedly murdered by his employee, Ibra Foli, with the assistance of accomplices Malick Njie and Alfusainey Jallow.

These tragedies are compounded by past cases where foreign nationals and returning Africans have faced similar fates.

For instance:

A Sierra Leonean man was arrested for the murder of a British woman in Gambia.

A British woman feared her brother's murderer would walk free.

Another case saw a wife confess to the killing of her British husband in Gambia.

These crimes are not isolated incidents. They reveal a troubling trend: violence against those who come to help, invest, or simply live peacefully among the very people they see as family.

Why It’s Wrong to Kill Black Allies

For centuries, Africans and the diaspora have faced systemic oppression from external forces. The strength of Africa lies in its unity, its ability to bridge divides and rebuild from within. When Black people turn on their own, especially those who return with knowledge, resources, or simply goodwill, they commit more than murder. They commit crimes against humanity and betray the very ideals of Pan-Africanism.

To kill a returning African or an ally is to:

Destroy Hope: Those who return often carry a vision of rebuilding Africa. Their murder destroys that dream for themselves and countless others inspired by their example.

Perpetuate Division: Black-on-Black violence perpetuates the very systems of oppression colonial powers instilled to divide and conquer.

Fuel Global Prejudice: These acts reinforce harmful stereotypes about Africa, alienating potential allies and discouraging investments from the diaspora.

Commit Treason Against Our Legacy: The ancestors fought for unity and liberation. Killing our own is a betrayal of their sacrifices.

Misplaced Priorities: Protecting Others, Not Ourselves

It is infuriating to see how some Africans treat outsiders with reverence while turning against their own. At airports, in tourist zones, and in dealings with non-Black foreigners, Africans often go above and beyond to cater to these individuals — the same entities that perpetuated the traumas of colonialism and slavery.

Yet, when it comes to fellow Africans or returning members of the diaspora, the reception is too often marked by hostility, exploitation, and violence.

This behavior is tantamount to race treachery. It prioritizes the oppressors over our own gods and goddesses — the very people willing to uplift the continent.

The Silent Complicity of the Community

Perhaps the greatest betrayal lies in the silence of those who know better. Many hesitate to speak out against these crimes for fear of what “massa whyte” might think. But silence is complicity. Those who refuse to denounce these actions are as guilty as the perpetrators themselves.

What’s Next? Boycott Africa?

For those in the diaspora, the question now looms: Should we continue to invest in Africa, or should we boycott it altogether? The answer depends on whether the continent is willing to address these systemic failures and protect those who return.

A boycott would be devastating, but it may be the wake-up call needed to remind Africans of the value of their returning brothers and sisters. It is time to demand:

Accountability: Justice for those who have been murdered and protection for those who return.

Education: Teaching the value of unity and the dangers of Black-on-Black violence.

Cultural Revival: Rebuilding a sense of shared purpose and pride among Africans and the diaspora.

The Choice Is Ours

Africans and the diaspora must now decide: Will we continue to destroy ourselves from within, or will we unite to build a stronger future? The time for excuses and silence is over. If Africa is to rise, it must start by protecting and valuing its own. To do otherwise is to betray the very essence of what it means to be African.
