Saying Sorry Empty-Handed Is Racist

From the time Black children first step into a kindergarten classroom, they should be taught the unvarnished truth: "sorry" is an abusive word. A word that has been weaponized against us. It is a term that, when spoken by the oppressors, carries no receipt weight, no change, no resolution. It is a hollow sound meant to placate and deflect, while the status quo remains firmly in place. Sorry means nothing when it is not accompanied by action—concrete, measurable action.

When they tell us sorry, we need to demand numbers, receipts, and reparations. We need to make it clear that words without resolution are just another form of psychological warfare. 

For centuries, Black people have been subjected to apologies laced with disdain. 

We’ve been told sorry as we are simultaneously called “dirty Africans,” marginalized, and kept at the bottom of every economic and social ladder. Sorry is their tool to manage our rage, to quiet our resistance, to keep us in line while they continue to exploit and degrade us.

Let’s read history. When the Jewish people suffered atrocities, reparations followed. The Holocaust survivors received cheques, and there are continuous efforts to ensure that the memory of their suffering is honored and that financial restitution remains an ongoing conversation. Compare that to how the world treats Black people. We get told sorry. We get commemorative plaques and shallow gestures of acknowledgment. We get movies and speeches—performative nonsense meant to pacify us. But where is the resolution? Where are the cheques, the investments, the systemic overhauls?

It’s not that they don’t know how to make amends. When it’s in their interest, they can do it—and they have done it. 

But for Black people, their “sorry” is what their elites have decided is the bare minimum to ensure their survival as we edge closer to whatever will precipitate the events pre-2075. They calculate what is just enough to keep us subdued, to keep us from rising en masse. Their apologies are strategic, not sincere.

If you fall for this hokey-dokey, if you accept these empty words, then you have disregarded history since 375 AD.  ignored the patterns of exploitation, subjugation, and manipulation. 

This system was never designed to apologize to us with meaning. It was built to keep us in chains—literal and figurative. To accept a “sorry” without resolution is to betray our ancestors and to surrender the future of our children.

Teach our children that sorry is not enough. Teach them to see through the lies, the manipulation, the gaslighting. Teach them that what matters is accountability, justice, and restitution. Sorry without action is abuse. Sorry without resolution is a slap in the face. Sorry empty-handed is racist.
