Rishi Sunak, the former British Prime Minister, is married to Akshata Murty, an Indian businesswoman and the daughter of Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, a global IT services and outsourcing company.

Details:

  1. Akshata Murty:

    • She is a successful entrepreneur and fashion designer.
    • Akshata holds shares in Infosys, making her one of the wealthiest women in the UK.
    • She has a background in finance and has worked in venture capital before starting her own businesses.
  2. Narayana Murthy:

    • Known as the "Father of the Indian IT Industry."
    • He co-founded Infosys in 1981, which has become one of the largest IT service companies in the world.
The couple has often been in the spotlight due to their wealth, Akshata’s financial ties to Infosys, and their tax arrangements, which have been subject to public scrutiny.

Infosys, a global IT services and outsourcing company, has been involved in various contracts with UK government departments, including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). In 2009, reports indicated that Infosys, along with other Indian IT firms, was preparing to bid for outsourcing contracts with UK departments such as the DWP, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and the Ministry of Justice, aiming to help improve government technology systems and reduce costs.

In recent years, Infosys has secured multiple contracts across different UK government sectors. Between 2012 and 2023, the company was awarded government contracts worth over £100 million. Notably, in 2022, Infosys secured a £7.45 million infrastructure testing project with the Home Office.

Additionally, in 2023, Infosys was among 28 companies that won a place on the NHS Shared Business Services’ £250 million 'Intelligence Automation' Framework and was also one of 62 companies on the Financial Conduct Authority’s £563 million 'Digital Services Framework Agreement'.

While specific details about Infosys's current engagements with the DWP are limited, the company's involvement in UK government contracts has been significant and growing. In 2023, Infosys billed £7 million to the UK government, marking a 49% increase from the previous year.

It's important to note that all government contracts are awarded following an open and fair process, with decisions rigorously scrutinized to ensure transparency and fairness.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) oversees benefits such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in the UK. Concerns have been raised regarding the number of claimants who have died while awaiting decisions or appeals, as well as the frequency of decisions being overturned upon review.

Claimant Deaths Pending Appeal:

  • Between April 2013 and April 2018, approximately 7,990 disabled individuals died within six months of registering a PIP claim that was subsequently rejected. This equates to about 1,600 deaths annually.

  • Additionally, more than 17,000 people died while waiting for a decision on their disability benefit claims during the same period.

Overturned Decisions:

  • In the five years leading up to January 2024, around 455,000 individuals successfully appealed DWP decisions on PIP through mandatory reconsiderations. Notably, the success rate for appeals has been significant, with seven out of ten PIP appeals being won, often based on evidence already held by the DWP.

  • The DWP has acknowledged flaws in the assessment process, with nearly 80,000 PIP decisions overturned at initial review in a single year, indicating systemic issues in initial evaluations.

Recent Developments:

  • In 2024, the DWP faced scrutiny over errors that denied thousands of individuals their rightful disability benefits, with 59% of successful tribunal appeals by PIP applicants highlighting significant administrative shortcomings.

  • The number of internal reviews conducted by the DWP following claimant deaths or serious harm has risen in recent years, reflecting growing concerns about the department's handling of benefit claims.
