If the Universe Is 13.8 Billion Years Old, Shouldn't We Be Able to See Only 13.8 Billion Light-Years Away?

It seems straightforward: the universe is about 13.8 billion years old, and light travels at a fixed speed, so the farthest we should be able to see should be 13.8 billion light-years away. Yet the observable universe spans roughly 93 billion light-years. How?

The answer is simple: space itself is expanding.

When we look at distant galaxies, we’re also looking back in time. The light reaching us today left those galaxies billions of years ago. During its journey, the space between us and the source kept stretching. So, although the light may have traveled for nearly 13.8 billion years, the galaxy that emitted it is now about 46 billion light-years away. This gives the observable universe a diameter of around 93 billion light-years.

This doesn’t break relativity. Nothing is moving through space faster than light. On cosmic scales, space itself expands, which general relativity allows. The speed-of-light limit applies to motion through spacetime and to information transfer, not to the expansion of spacetime itself.

Think of dots on an inflating balloon. The dots, representing galaxies, get farther apart because the surface stretches, not because the dots race across it.

Two different distances matter here:

  • Light-travel distance: how long the light has been traveling — nearly 13.8 billion years.

  • Present-day distance: how far the source is now — roughly 46 billion light-years.

They’re different because the universe expanded while the light was en route.

One more point: the observable universe is just the part we can see. Light from farther regions hasn’t had enough time to reach us. The whole universe could be much larger — or even infinite.

The 93-billion-light-year figure isn’t a loophole or a contradiction. It’s simply what happens when space keeps stretching over the 13.8 billion years that the universe has existed.
