Scientific inquiry often begins not with answers but with shapes that refuse to resolve themselves. The “jellyfish” on Mars and the “jellyfish” recorded over Iraq belong to this category of phenomena: visually striking, conceptually ambiguous, and evidentially incomplete. Their resemblance invites comparison, yet resemblance alone cannot establish connection. What we are left with is not a conclusion but a set of questions that demand careful, disciplined examination.

The Martian case emerges from a single rover image — a momentary configuration of pixels that appears biological but may be geological, optical, or entirely artefactual. The terrestrial case, captured by a military thermal sensor, presents an object whose behaviour is reported but not independently verified. In both instances, the available data are fragmentary. They do not confirm technology, biology, or sentience. They do not exclude them either.

An inquiry‑based perspective therefore avoids premature categorisation. Instead, it asks: What does each observation allow us to infer? What does each observation fail to establish? And how do we prevent visual similarity from becoming evidential overreach?

1. The Martian Case: Image, Artefact, or Formation?

The so‑called “jellyfish on Mars” originates from a single frame captured by NASA’s Curiosity rover. The feature resembles a bulbous upper mass with trailing structures, prompting comparisons to biological organisms. However, inquiry begins with the limitations of the medium: rover cameras are susceptible to cosmic‑ray strikes, hot pixels, dust shadows, and sensor blooming. NASA has documented these artefacts extensively.

A single anomalous frame, lacking shadow, motion, or corroboration in adjacent images, cannot establish the presence of an object in the conventional sense. It may represent:

  • a geological formation viewed under unusual lighting,

  • a transient imaging artefact,

  • or a combination of erosion and shadow that evokes biological morphology.

None of these possibilities can be excluded, and none can be confirmed. The inquiry therefore remains open, but constrained: there is no evidence of sentience, technology, or biology. The phenomenon is visual, not behavioural, and thus cannot support claims about agency or origin.

2. The Iraqi Case: A Thermal Anomaly with Uncertain Behaviour

The “jellyfish” recorded over Iraq in 2017 is more complex because it involves a functioning military sensor rather than a still photograph. The thermal/FLIR system captured an airborne object with a bright upper mass and elongated structures beneath it. Reports associated with the footage claim that the object traversed a military facility, moved over water, descended into the water, remained submerged for approximately seventeen minutes, and then re‑emerged.

These claims, if verified, would imply transmedium capability — a behaviour not associated with known human aircraft. However, inquiry requires distinguishing what the footage shows from what is inferred. A thermal camera does not depict physical shape; it depicts relative temperature. Cold objects can appear large, warm objects small, and reflections can mimic structure. Without multi‑sensor corroboration, calibrated tracking data, or independent verification, the behavioural claims remain unconfirmed.

The object may represent:

  • a drone or equipment viewed under unusual thermal contrast,

  • a sensor artefact or reflection,

  • or a genuinely unusual aerial phenomenon.

None of these explanations can be ruled out, and none can be confidently established.

3. Similarity: Visual, Not Evidential

The resemblance between the Martian and Iraqi forms is superficial. Both evoke the morphology of jellyfish, but resemblance alone does not imply shared origin, shared function, or shared nature. Human cognition is predisposed to pattern recognition, especially when confronted with ambiguous stimuli. Two unrelated phenomena can appear similar without being related in any meaningful way.

An inquiry‑based approach therefore treats similarity as a prompt for further questions, not as evidence of connection.

Thus, both cases remain unresolved, not because they suggest extraordinary explanations, but because the available evidence is too limited to support any definitive interpretation.

5. What Inquiry Allows Us to Say

An inquiry‑driven perspective does not aim to close the question prematurely. It aims to articulate what can be known, what cannot be known, and what remains open.

  • Its behaviour is uncertain and unverified.

  • It may be technological, environmental, or sensor‑related.

  • There is no confirmed evidence of sentience or extraterrestrial origin.

  • Their similarity is visual, not physical.

Conclusion: The Value of Remaining Uncertain

The two “jellyfish” cases illustrate how ambiguity can provoke speculation, but they also demonstrate why inquiry must resist the temptation to convert ambiguity into certainty. The Martian anomaly is an unresolved visual artefact. The Iraqi anomaly is an unresolved thermal event. Neither case provides the evidential foundation required to claim technology, sentience, or extraterrestrial origin.

The most intellectually honest position is not dismissal, nor belief, but sustained curiosity. Inquiry does not demand conclusions; it demands clarity about what the evidence can support and where it fails to do so. In that sense, the jellyfish on Mars and the jellyfish on Earth are not answers — they are reminders of how much remains unknown, and how carefully we must approach the unknown when the data are incomplete.
