When a person has experienced trauma, especially trauma that has left them feeling constantly threatened, they can become extremely sensitive to anything that looks like an attack. Their mind starts looking for danger before it even checks whether danger is actually there. This is called hypervigilance. The person may hear criticism, disagreement or questioning and immediately feel that they are being attacked, even when the other person is simply asking a legitimate question. When this is combined with narcissistic vulnerability, the reaction can become even stronger. A narcissistic defence is not necessarily about someone simply thinking they are better than everyone else. It can also involve having a very fragile sense of self that must be protected from shame, guilt, weakness or humiliation.
