Was Hercules heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or gay ?

Gay is a term that refers to a  'carefree', 'cheerful', or 'bright and showy' person regardless sex or sexuality. While scant usage referring to male homosexuality dates to the late 19th century, that meaning became increasingly common by the mid-20th century.

The ancient myths about Hercules (Heracles in Greek mythology) do suggest that he had relationships with both men and women, reflecting the more fluid sexual norms of ancient Greece.

Historical and Mythological Context

Hylas:

Hylas was indeed a young companion of Hercules, often described as his lover in various accounts.

After killing Hylas' father, Hercules took Hylas under his protection. Their relationship is depicted as affectionate and intimate, indicating a romantic bond.

The story of Hylas being abducted by water nymphs during the Argonauts' expedition highlights Hercules' deep affection and his desperate search for him, suggesting a significant emotional connection.

Iolaus:

Iolaus, Hercules' nephew, is also often cited as one of his lovers. Iolaus assisted Hercules in many of his labors and was a devoted companion.

Ancient texts and vase paintings sometimes depict them together in a manner that implies a close, possibly romantic, relationship.

Other Male Companions:

Hercules had other male companions and lovers, reflecting the common practice in ancient Greece where men often had relationships with both women and younger men (known as pederasty). These relationships were generally seen as a mentorship bond with an educational and protective element, alongside the romantic aspect.

Marvel Comics Interpretation

In Marvel Comics, Hercules is portrayed in various ways over the years:

Bisexual Representation:

In "Hercules: Fall of an Avenger #1", it is suggested that Hercules had relationships with both men and women, including Northstar, an openly gay character. This aligns with the more fluid and inclusive portrayal of characters in modern comics, reflecting a broader understanding of sexuality.

Romantic Relationships:

While the primary focus in many comics is on Hercules' adventures and heroism, his relationships, including romantic ones, are sometimes explored to add depth to his character.

Conclusion

The depiction of Hercules in both ancient mythology and modern interpretations like Marvel Comics shows a hero who experiences love and companionship with both men and women. This aligns with historical accounts of Greek bisexuality and pederasty.
