Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was founded in 1865 by Confederate veterans in the southern United States, many of whom were Democrats. At that time, the Democratic Party in the South was largely composed of individuals who opposed Reconstruction and supported the maintenance of white supremacy and segregationist policies. In the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump defied traditional political expectations by gaining a noteworthy portion of the vote from minority groups, particularly among Black men and Latinos. Although Trump did not win a majority of these votes, his performance was better than expected for a Republican candidate often labeled as racially divisive.
