The terms "racism," "bigotry," "xenophobia," "prejudice," and "favouritism" often overlap but have distinct meanings.

1. Definitions and Differences:

Racism:

Definition: Racism involves both prejudice and discrimination based on race, typically reinforced by societal structures, power dynamics, and institutions. It goes beyond individual beliefs or actions to include systems that disadvantage certain racial groups while privileging others.

Key Element: Power dynamics play a significant role. Racism often involves a group that holds societal, economic, or political power using that power to maintain or enforce racial hierarchies.

Bigotry:

Definition: Bigotry is an unreasonable attachment to one's own opinions, beliefs, or prejudices, accompanied by intolerance of other groups or opinions. This intolerance can be based on various factors, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

Key Element: Bigotry doesn't necessarily involve power dynamics or systemic structures; it's more about personal attitudes of intolerance.

Xenophobia:

Definition: Xenophobia is the fear or hatred of people from other countries or cultures. It focuses on differences in nationality, ethnicity, or foreignness.

Key Element: Xenophobia is based on fear or dislike of "outsiders" or "foreigners," and while it can overlap with racism, it’s specifically about nationality and cultural differences.

Prejudice:

Definition: Prejudice is a preconceived opinion or feeling, usually negative, toward a person or group based on their perceived characteristics, such as race, gender, religion, or nationality.

Key Element: Prejudice is about attitudes and beliefs, which can exist independently of any action or power dynamic.

Favoritism:

Definition: Favouritism is the unfair preference for one person or group over others, often based on personal relationships, biases, or affiliations.

Key Element: Favouritism is about giving preferential treatment, but unlike racism or bigotry, it doesn’t necessarily involve animosity or discrimination against others based on race, nationality, or other identity factors.
