Core Areas of Training at Sandhurst: Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS)

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) is the British Army’s officer training academy, where future army officers—both from the UK and various international militaries—are trained in leadership, strategy, and military tactics.

Core Areas of Training at Sandhurst:

  1. Leadership Development – The core focus is on command, discipline, and decision-making under pressure.
  2. Tactics & Strategy – Cadets learn battlefield tactics, operational planning, and strategic leadership.
  3. Physical Training – High levels of fitness, endurance, and resilience are required, with rigorous training exercises.
  4. Weapons Handling & Fieldcraft – Training in rifles, marksmanship, survival skills, camouflage, reconnaissance, and combat drills.
  5. International Relations & Ethics – Understanding of global military affairs, ethics in warfare, and the law of armed conflict.
  6. History & Theory of Warfare – Study of military history, past conflicts, and the evolution of modern warfare.
  7. Drills & Ceremonial Training – Mastering military drills, parades, and protocols.

The Commissioning Course lasts 44 weeks and is divided into three terms:

  • Term 1: Individual skills, discipline, basic tactics.
  • Term 2: Leadership under simulated operational conditions.
  • Term 3: Advanced leadership, international military operations, and a final exercise.

Graduates from Sandhurst receive the rank of Second Lieutenant and go on to lead troops in the British Army or their respective national militaries.
