Can non-human primates understand money?

While capuchin monkeys have no concept of human economics, researchers have demonstrated that they can learn to use tokens as symbolic representations of value. In a series of pioneering experiments, monkeys were trained to exchange otherwise meaningless objects—such as metal discs or plastic tokens—with researchers in return for food rewards.

Once trained, the tokens ceased to be mere objects. They became a medium of exchange.

Learning Symbolic Value

The most important finding was that capuchin monkeys understood that a token had no intrinsic value, yet could reliably be exchanged for something desirable. This ability to assign value to an abstract symbol is considered a significant cognitive milestone and forms one of the foundations of economic behavior.

The monkeys were not simply responding to conditioned cues; they demonstrated that they could use the tokens flexibly in different situations to obtain rewards.

Distinguishing Value

Researchers also assigned different values to different tokens. Some could be exchanged for highly preferred foods, such as grapes, while others yielded less desirable rewards, such as cucumber.

The monkeys rapidly learned these distinctions and consistently selected the tokens that offered the greatest reward. Their choices showed that they could compare relative value rather than simply react to immediate stimuli.

Responding to Prices

In later experiments, researchers manipulated the "price" of food by changing how many tokens were required for a particular reward.

The monkeys adjusted their behavior accordingly. When the cost of a preferred food increased, they often purchased less of it or switched to alternatives, displaying behavior consistent with basic economic decision-making.

Decision-Making Biases

Perhaps the most striking finding was that the monkeys exhibited several cognitive biases long associated with human economic behavior.

These included:

  • Loss aversion – losses had a greater psychological impact than equivalent gains.

  • Reference dependence – choices were influenced by prior expectations.

  • Framing effects – identical outcomes produced different decisions depending on how options were presented.

These results suggest that some aspects of economic decision-making may have evolutionary origins that predate humans.

Social Learning

The monkeys also learned by observing one another. They copied successful exchange behaviors and adapted to changing reward structures without requiring direct training for every new situation.

This demonstrated that knowledge about symbolic exchange could spread socially within a group.

Conclusions

The researchers concluded that several fundamental components of economic behavior are not uniquely human.

The experiments showed that capuchin monkeys can:

  • Understand that an abstract token can represent future value.

  • Exchange symbolic objects for tangible rewards.

  • Distinguish between higher- and lower-value tokens.

  • Modify their choices in response to changing prices.

  • Display consistent decision-making biases similar to those observed in humans.

Importantly, the research did not conclude that monkeys developed human economies, invented money, or created financial systems. These studies remain among the strongest pieces of evidence that the roots of economic behavior—and even some of our predictable irrationalities—extend deep into our shared evolutionary history.
