Everybody loves the god of every planet because they cannot afford not to. The god need not be supernatural. It is whatever structure becomes so deeply entangled with survival that obedience to it is indistinguishable from necessity: capital, the state, the market, empire, religion, social order, or some future system we have not yet named. Its power does not depend upon everyone sincerely believing in it. It depends upon everyone being materially unable to ignore it.

This is why dependence is more powerful than belief. You can despise money and still need it to eat; distrust the state and still live under its laws; reject the values of a dominant culture and still depend upon its institutions for work, status, relationships, and belonging. The question is therefore not whether people genuinely love the system, but whether they can afford to behave as though they do. When the cost of dissent is sufficiently high, compliance becomes indistinguishable from conviction. Silence looks like agreement, participation looks like consent, and survival itself becomes evidence that the system is legitimate.

Every civilization eventually produces something around which life must organize itself. The name changes, but the function remains: it allocates resources, determines status, defines acceptable behaviour, and establishes the conditions under which people can continue to exist. At that point, resistance becomes less a matter of opinion than of material capacity. The person with no alternative is not necessarily a believer; they are simply constrained. Yet from the outside, constraint and devotion can look remarkably similar.

Perhaps this is what a god ultimately is—not merely something people worship, but something they cannot afford to disobey. The most powerful god does not require your love, your faith, or even your admiration. It requires only your dependence. And when dependence becomes universal, everyone appears to be a believer.
