Alexander the Great: The African God, Egyptian Myth, and the Birth of a Conqueror

Alexander the Great's story has pulled in a lot of people over centuries, creating legends that blend history with mythology. One of the most worthy of these legends suggests that Alexander was the son of Amun, an Egyptian god often symbolized as a hidden force behind earthly rulers.

This belief, fueled by his mother, Queen Olympias, and further reinforced by the Oracle of Amun in Siwa, granted Alexander a unique, divine identity.

Rooted in the myth of Nectanebo II—the last Egyptian Pharaoh who, disguised as Amun, is said to have fathered Alexander—this story offered Alexander a bridge between his Macedonian heritage and the sacred realms of Egyptian occult myth.

Whether purely symbolic or grounded in reality, this legend helped shape Alexander’s self-esteem, legacy, and the political propaganda that would later create and sustain his paradigm.

The Power of Myth and Divine Lineage

Growing up, Alexander must have been surrounded by stories and socially/ individually beneficial propaganda incorporated into his reality concerning gods and heroes.

In ancient Mediterranean world, divine ancestry was a common requirement of royalty. Figures like Achilles and Heracles, both said to be sons of gods, set a cultural precedent that positioned Alexander to view divine lineage as a natural aspect of leadership.

His mother, Olympias, further goaded or encouraged him to believe he was destined for greatness, perhaps even divinely chosen. These stories are not new in antiquity and most likely strengthened his sense of uniqueness, preparing him psychologically and politically for his role as a conqueror who would unite Greek and Eastern cultures under one rule.

These myths gave Alexander a sense of higher destiny, influencing his understanding of leadership and his place in the world.

Nectanebo II and the Legend of Amun

The legend of Nectanebo II, as evidenced in the Alexander Romance literature, provides a captivating edge that connects Alexander to Egypt’s ancient lineage.

After being overthrown by the Persians, Nectanebo, the last native Pharaoh of Egypt, allegedly fled to Macedonia. Disguised, he infiltrated the court of Philip II and Olympias, Alexander’s parents.

The story goes that Nectanebo, using his knowledge of astrology, predicted that Olympias would bear a son destined to be a great conqueror. Then, using his magical abilities, he disguised himself as the god Amun (or Ammon) and seduced Olympias.

According to this myth, Alexander was born not as the son of a mortal king, but of an Egyptian deity.

For Alexander, this story served both personal and political purposes.

As he grew up hearing whispers of his divine origin, his sense of identity as the son of a god solidified, setting him apart from other kings and generals.

This story of divine origin helped legitimize his rule in Egypt and further connected him to the Egyptian people, who revered Amun as a god of kingship and creation. For Egyptians, Alexander was not just another foreign conqueror but a ruler with divine ties to their own ancient heritage.

Alexander’s Visit to the Oracle of Amun at Siwa

Alexander’s journey to the Oracle of Amun at Siwa in 332 BCE became an important or a significant moment in his life not to be forgotten, increasing his self esteem and belief in his divine connection.

On his arrival, the priests allegedly greeted him as the “Son of Amun,” a powerful title that suggested Alexander was divinely sanctioned to rule Egypt. At this revered temple, Alexander sought confirmation of his lineage, and according to accounts, he received answers that reinforced the myth of his divine parentage.

This acknowledgment from a respected oracle would have resonated deeply with the Egyptian people, who believed that Amun was a god capable of communicating through oracles and temples. For Alexander, it was a confirmation of his unique role as both a conqueror and a divinely chosen ruler. This divine endorsement strengthened his claim to rule Egypt, extending his authority beyond military power to include the realm of spiritual legitimacy.

The City of Alexander

One of Alexander the Great's most enduring achievements is the city of Alexandria in Egypt. Named after him, Alexandria was founded in 331 BCE on the Mediterranean coast and strategically positioned as a link between Greece and Egypt, symbolizing the union of Greek and Egyptian cultures under Alexander’s rule. The city became a center of knowledge, commerce, and multicultural exchange, embodying Alexander’s vision of a unified empire where diverse cultures could coexist and flourish.

Alexandria’s establishment also reinforced Alexander’s divine connection in the eyes of the Egyptians. The city housed the Temple of Amun and the Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Alexandria soon became a seat of intellectual achievement and religious reverence, housing the Great Library of Alexandria, which served as a depot of knowledge from across Alexander’s massive empire. This fusion of intellectual pursuit and spiritual significance mirrored Alexander's ambition to be seen as a godlike figure who could go beyong cultural and geographic boundaries.

The founding of Alexandria also served as a symbol immortalizing his name and influence in one of history’s most famous cities. Alexandria continued to flourish long after his death,  proof to the political  propaganda and claims of divinity and empire that Alexander created which inspired generations to view him not only as a conqueror but as a divine visionary whose name would be forever painted into the canvas of history.
